Epsita is a professor of comparative literature at Jadavpur University in Kolkata. She also likes telling stories in words and visuals. Epsita will make an audio-visual presentation on her study of the Muharram traditions across different districts of West Bengal.
Ashavari is a dancer and choreographer trained under Kathak maestro Pandit Birju Maharaj. She received a grant to choreograph a performance based on the story of Surpanakha. Her performance sees the character of Surpanakha through many lenses—as a beautiful woman, an ugly rakshasi and a victim of patriarchal norms, among others—each representative of a different version of the Ramayana. Through her performance Ashavari has sought to contest traditional Kathak’s polar understanding of characters as either heroes or non-heroes.
We hope you can make it and look forward to seeing you at these events!
