Amitesh Shrivastava

Born in Khairagarh, Chhattisgarh in 1975, Amitesh Shrivastava obtained his BFA from Khairagarh University in 1997, and an MFA from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda in 2000. Shrivastava’s paintings and drawings make place for the intimacy of his quotidian experiences and encounters in rural Chhattisgarh within observations on the broader socio-political changes in the region. With tenderness towards the familiar that nevertheless does not slip into the terrain of the personal, Shrivastava conjures scenes of struggle and upheaval in contemporary India. His paintings express a sensitivity towards the web of relations between human beings, the land, plant and animal life, and their place within the structures of governance imposed from outside. While Shrivastava’s primary concern is the enactment of power, he is also alert to moments of pleasure and dissent that allow an understanding of the daily detours from total oppression. Shrivastava’s loose brushstrokes and expressionistic handling of colour give expressi to these many slippages.

Shrivastava’s works have most recently been exhibited in several group shows including Frieze Art Fair New York (2019 & 2018), Frieze Art Fair London (2017)Stalkings and Other Stories curated by Prajna Desai at Project 88, Mumbai (2016), Other’s Other curated by Shreyas Karle at Gallery Art district XIII, New Delhi (2016), Len Den curated by Shreyas Karle and Hemali Bhuta at Mumbai Art Room (2015), Räume für notizen (room for notes) curated by Gunter Vallaster, Wechselstrom gallery, Vienna (2014), among others.
