Tejal Shah

Tejal Shah, Chipko, Lenticular print, 70.8 x 47.2 inches, 2018

A lenticular. sleight of hand. an interruption. that left no trace. haptic in the forest. a bird flew across the sky. art made life more interesting than art. gesture of resistance and healing. intercepting history.

The Chipko movement was spear-headed by women. A non-violent protest against deforestation in which people hugged trees to prevent them from being cut. Inspired by the incidents that lead to the spontaneous protests by Bishnois and the famous Khejarli massacre dating back to the 18th century in Rajasthan. Chipko became an effective tool for ecological and spiritual resistance.

What difference did it make?
