The final segment is a two-channel video with sound, titled Her Nature, which embodies the spirit of Akka Mahadevi’s deep spiritual ecology. Akka is a 12th-century anti-establishment poet from Karnataka, who left behind her birthplace, her parents, her clothes, and her husband, to wander wild in search of divinity in nature. Bhat perceives Akka’s transcendental search as embedded in a deep desire to find herself— inseparable from nature. Could her gesture of ultimate social defiance be a search for self-realization? The video is accompanied by American cellist, and vocalist, Theresa Wong’s musical composition, Fluency of Trees, a piece that combines song forms, noise, and harmony merging with cello and voice. Shot in multiple locations in California, the video captures a desire to rewild our bodies and find our primal alertness in tune with the unconstructed world.
