Capturing Small-Town Whimsy

Amitesh Shrivastava uses abstraction to illustrate unspoken divides between the multiple worlds
Phalguni Desai, The Hindu, September 18, 2017

Th
e first wall you encounter upon entering Project 88’s ongoing show sports a series of 11 ink on paper drawings titled ‘Librarian and the Anteater’. In bold, sure strokes, the series works as a panel from a comic depicting a somewhat curious incident between a librarian, and an anteater. Those familiar with the gallery’s artists will recognise the artist who worked those hurried but sure-fire strokes, Amitesh Shrivastava, from a previous outing in a group show at the gallery curated by Prajna Desai. This time, Shrivastava takes over the gallery in a solo titled Trespassers and Translators .

In the painting-heavy solo, the Chhattisgarh born and raised artist uses abstraction to illustrate unspoken divides between the multiple worlds he occupies, the multiple languages that are spoken in those worlds, and all the things that get lost in translation.
