Mahesh Baliga’s work ‘Seed Collector’ is featured in ART India’s latest issue, ‘Reclaiming Hope’, as part of psychologist Sonali Gupta’s essay, which illuminates paths of optimism. As a response, Baliga reflects on its essence through his painting:
“Every day, we find ourselves immersed in the sorrow of conflicts, as they reach us through the pages of the daily newspapers. Sometimes, amid our routines, we forget, but other times, we carry this weight with us. Occasionally, we encounter violence in our everyday lives, nudging us towards despair. However, in the midst of this turmoil, there are moments of clarity. Picture this: a stroll through public garden reveals an elderly woman, bent with age, diligently gathering what appears to be refuse.
Piqued, I enquire about her activity, only to discover that she is collecting rare seeds, a practice she has upheld since her youth. Witnessing this selfless act of preserving the essence of trees even as they dwindle fills me with hope, despite the surrounding chaos, of which I too am a part.”
